NSF fellowships are awarded to outstanding students for graduate study in sciences, mathematics, and engineering. The Graduate School supports NSF Graduate Research Fellows who choose to attend one of our graduate programs and recognizes the value of their activities at Virginia Tech.

The National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. (www.gemfellowship.org)

The GEM Program has entered into a unique partnership with seven of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Science and Technology Centers (STC) to offer graduate fellowships. The GEM-STC Fellowship Program is designed to offer opportunities for underrepresented students to obtain M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in engineering and the natural and physical sciences.

- The GM Sullivan Fellowship Program is a partnership between General Motors and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). The program is dedicated to the honor of the late Reverend Dr. Leon H. Sullivan and serves to perpetuate the Sullivan Principles championed by Dr. Sullivan during his lifetime.

The National Academies administers Postdoctoral and Senior Research Awards through its Associateship Programs, part of the Policy and Global Affairs Division. The Research Associateship Programs are sponsored by federal laboratories at over one hundred locations in the United States and overseas. Research Associateship awards are given for the purpose of conducting research at a specific laboratory chosen by the applicant; are made to doctoral level scientists and engineers who can apply their special knowledge and research talents to research areas that are of interest to them and to the host laboratories and centers; and, are made to Postdoctoral Associates (within 5 years of the doctorate) and Senior Associates (normally 5 years or more beyond the doctorate).

Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program (www.uncfsp.org/JPFP)

This fellowship provides full-time underrepresented graduate students in science, technology and education with financial support for their education in NASA-related disciplines. Students are selected for fellowships that include financial support and a 6-week, hands-on research experience at a NASA Center or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Fellowship tenure is three years for candidates seeking either a master's or Ph.D. degree in the NASA-related fields.

NPSC is a unique partnership between industry, government agencies and laboratories, and higher education. Established in 1987, the NPSC is headquartered in Los Angeles. The NPSC has one primary objective: Increase the number of qualified U.S.-citizen Ph.D.'s in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool of women and historically underrepresented minorities. NPSC accomplishes this objective by assisting corporations and government agencies and laboratories in awarding doctoral fellowships to outstanding U.S. students.

The APA Congressional Fellowship program was started in 2000 to support efforts in Congress to promote smart growth solutions in the nation's communities. The program brings the perspective of planners to the federal legislative process. The six-month fellowship is offered to graduate students and immediate post-graduate students in planning or related fields. Two six-month fellowships are offered each year. Fellows receive a one-time $4,000 stipend.

Wellesley College is delighted to announce a visiting fellowship generously funded by the Norma Wilentz Hess Faculty and Program Fund in Computer Science. We are seeking an outstanding teacher and scholar to be the first Norma Wilentz Hess Fellow, a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor position starting in September, 2006. Applicants should have a Ph.D in Computer Science or a related discipline. Strong candidates in any area of specialty will be considered, but we especially encourage applicants in interdisciplinary fields such as multimedia, human/computer interaction, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, educational computing, and ethical, social, and legal aspects of computing.

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship program is sponsored by the Department of Defense with the goal of providing the United States with talented, doctorally trained American men and women who will lead state of the art research projects in disciplines having the greatest payoff to national defense requirements. The Fellowships are awards conferring high honors upon the recipients, three years of full support in pursuit of a doctoral degree in disciplines of military importance in science and engineering, and are portable, allowing the recipients to pursue their graduate studies at whatever U.S. institution they choose to attend.

- These grants are part of GW's Partnership in Securing Cyberspace through Education and Service (PISCES) program. Over $3.25 million in funding has been provided for two-year, full scholarships (tuition, books, stipend, and in most cases room and board) for students to study computer security at GW or a partner university. After completing their coursework, students will help protect the nation's information infrastructure by working as security experts in a government agency for two years.

The Travel Fund provides Virginia Tech graduate students with funding for travel, accommodation, and meal expenses so that they may present their research at professional conferences, symposiums, and other similar events. The goal of the ADVANCE program is to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce. Creative strategies to realize this goal are sought from men and women. Members of underrepresented minority groups and individuals with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply. Proposals that address the participation and advancement of women from underrepresented minority groups are encouraged.

The Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) program aims to significantly increase the number of students who are U.S. citizens and permanent residents receiving post secondary degrees in the computing disciplines. Initially, its emphasis will be on students from communities with longstanding under representation in computing: women, persons with disabilities, and minorities. Included minorities are African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. The BPC program seeks to engage the computing community in developing and implementing innovative methods to improve recruitment and retention of these students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
