Paul Eller earns SMART fellowship PDF Print E-mail
Computer Science student Paul Eller has been awarded a SMART fellowship for the 2008-2009 academic year to complete a masters degree. This fellowship will provide Eller with tuition, a stipend, a paid internship, and post-graduation job placement with the Department of Defense.

Paul Eller is a first year masters student in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. He joined the Computational Science Laboratory in the summer of 2007 after finishing his undergraduate degree in computer science from Virginia Tech. Prior to starting he masters’ work, he did undergraduate research with Dr. Adrian Sandu for a year.

Eller’s research work has involved working with the Kinetic Pre-Processor and GEOS-Chem. This work includes developing C integrators based on the already implemented Fortran integrators, developing a parser to convert GEOS-Chem input files to KPP input files, developing an automatic process to quickly and easily allow GEOS-Chem to interface with KPP, and parallelizing the KPP chemistry step within GEOS-Chem.

According to the SMART webpage, the Department of Defense (DoD) is proud to offer scholarships to undergraduate, master's and doctoral students who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for training in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) fields. The DoD also offers them career opportunities to continue their research as civilian employees of a DoD laboratory after graduation.

"I look forward to continuing my research in the Computational Science Laboratory next year and getting a chance to work with the Department of Defense in the future," said Eller.
