Dimitris Nikolopoulos, associate professor of computer science, is organizing a workshop on "Parallel Programming on Accelerator-Based Systems" (PPABS). Co-organized by Cal Ribbens (CS@VT) and Jose Moreira (IBM), the workshop will be held February 23 in Salt Lake City, in conjunction with the 13th ACM SIGPLAN Symposium on Principles and Practice of Parallel Programming (PPoPP'08).

According to Nikolopoulos, accelerator-based parallel architectures, including architectures based on
heterogeneous multi-core processors, FPGAs and GPUs, are rapidly becoming mainstream components in high-end computing systems, and are likely to play important roles in many more systems in the near future.  While the potential of accelerators has long been recognized, these architectures present several challenges to programmers. Conventional parallel programming models and libraries, parallel algorithms, and system software need to be restructured and redesigned to exploit the architectural strengths of accelerators. This workshop will bring together researchers from academia and industry to discuss the latest developments in parallel programming models, languages, tools, system software and application development for accelerator-based architectures.
