Active ImageJingwei Zhang, a graduate student of the math department under Dr. Layne T. Watson, professor of Computer Science and Mathematics, has recently been the recipient of the C.B. Ling scholarship for his research on terascale numerical algorithms for solving the chemical master equation, used in stochastic models of chemical and biological reaction networks.

“I'm working on solving the chemical master equation numerically, which is a well-known difficult problem because of the "curse of dimensionality". What we try to do is to tackle this problem by some cutting-edge numerical techniques,” says Zhang. “Even though the problem is more math-flavored, we do have to collaborate with biologists to make our solutions meaningful,” he concludes.

Jingwei Zhang’s research is also supported by the DOE Office of Science and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS).
