Yong Cao joined the Department of Computer Science in January as assistant professor. Dr. Cao’s research interests are in computer graphics, computer animation, and computer game research for training and education. Currently, he is establishing the Computer Animation and
Gaming Research Lab. He is also collaborating with the Center for
Human-Computer Interaction (CHCI) and Virginia Tech's Collaborative for Creative
Technologies in Arts and Design (CCTAD).
Before joining Virginia Tech, Dr. Cao worked for Electronic
Arts, the top video game publishing company, where he developed animation and
rendering systems for next generation console games. At EA he was involved
in the development of several game titles, including Sims, Lord of the Rings and The Simpsons.
Dr. Cao received his Ph.D. Computer Science in 2005 from UCLA. During his Ph.D. study, he worked with the Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) at USC. He
developed a speech-driven facial animation system with emotion control.
The system has been adopted in an Army Research Institute Project for
military training.
