AWC Leadership Scholarship PDF Print E-mail

Active ImageThe Association of Women in Computing was proud to award Leadership Scholarships to three deserving applicants at its first meeting of Spring semester last Tuesday, Jan 22.

The Leadership Scholarship was the brainchild of Meg Kurdziolek and was designed to promote organization activities and create leadership opportunities.  AWC members were encouraged to come up with an idea for an event that either brings members together, helps support women in computing, or raises funds for the organization.  They submitted their ideas to be juried by senior members, and winners were to receive a $100 cash prize and the opportunity to host their event with the help of fellow members.  AWC was proud to be able to award all applicants for their quality ideas; congratulations to the winners Mara Silva, Kristin Whetstone, and Lise Vincent!

Mara Silva has proposed a night where AWC members volunteer to help graduate students in technical majors who have children get a little bit of time to themselves.  She plans to run a babysitting event, where graduate students can drop off their children for a night of fun and games, and leave the adults to a no-strings-attached evening.  By sponsoring this event, we hope to help those women and men that are struggling to balance family and school.

Kristin has stumbled upon a way that we can program and make a little money.  She has proposed a poker night, where participants can play many different types of gambling games free of charge (though we will be taking donations at the door!).  There will be poker, black jack, and an AWC-programmed game of chance with lollipop prizes.  There will be snacks and drinks for sale, and plenty of fun to be had.

Lise would like to share a bit of her French heritage with the AWC and friends.  She has proposed a night of baking authentic French dishes!  On this night, we'll all be able to roll up our sleeves and enjoy making (and eating) delicious French cuisine with great company. We can't wait for more of those amazing crepes that she shared with us at our Winter Potluck last semester!

Stay tuned to the AWC homepage for news of the scheduling of these events, and congratulations, again, to Mara, Kristin, and Lise!
