My research interests in human-computer interaction (HCI) lie specifically in the area of social computing, including communication behavior and effects, and development communication (communication and information technology use and social impact in developing countries). Current research funded by the National Science Foundation includes "Participation on the Town Square in the Era of Web 2.0" (diggov.cs.vt.edu/) and "Digital Library Network for Crisis, Tragedy and Recovery" (http://www.ctrnet.net).  Prior to joining the HCI Center (hci.vt.edu) in 2002, I served as Director of Research for the Blacksburg Electronic Village (BEV) (www.bev.net) from its inception in 1993. I currently serve as Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Digital Government Society of North America (www.dgsna.org).

Social computing is the study of the social use and impact of information technology, and the study of information technology designed specifically for social purposes, such as interpersonal and group communication, discussion, and social interaction (e.g., electronic mail, instant messenger, discussion tools, blogging, and social websites, such as Friendster, Facebook, and MySpace). It draws on multiple disciplines, including sociology, social psychology, political science, communication studies, and computer science.
