Research Interests
My research interests in human-computer interaction lie specifically in the area of social computing (java.cs.vt.edu/public/chci/site/socialcomputing.html), including communication behavior and effects, and development communication (communication and information technology use and effects in developing countries). Recent research funded by the National Science Foundation includes "Modeling Online Participation in Local Government" (diggov.cs.vt.edu/) and "Capturing Ephemeral Data on the Tragedy at Virginia Tech." Prior to joining the HCI Center (hci.vt.edu) in 2002, I served as Director of Research for the Blacksburg Electronic Village (BEV) (www.bev.net) from its inception in 1993. I currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Digital Government Society of North America (www.dgsna.org).
