Recently, federal government agencies have launched new research programs intended to explore new ideas and architectures for the Internet of the future. To date, the Internet has functioned well based on the standard OSI seven-layer model, using a highly revered yet simple internet protocol (IP) based on packet data transmissions. However, the edge of the Internet is about to explode in bandwidth, number of devices, and human relevance, requiring revolutionary approaches and architectures that will pull the Internet to the edge. This talk, while stopping short of offering tangible proposals for the future Internet architecture, demonstrates the types of uses and remarkable changes that are about to happen at the edge of the Internet due to technological advances in the wireless and semiconductor research fields.
