Virtual Reality Helmet

Research is a cornerstone of the Computer Science Department. The advantage for students is enormous, because as professors and other researchers make their discoveries, they transport their knowledge and insights back to the classroom. And undergraduate and graduate students alike have opportunities not only to learn about, but also to actively participate in research projects.

Research is diverse, and cross-cutting initiatives are the norm, with many faculty members and students collaborating with colleagues in the department, researchers from other departments at Virginia Tech, and fellow investigators around the globe. The motto of our department is "We Collaborate!" The strength and breadth of our interdisciplinary activities makes our department unique.

In recent years, the department has given increasing attention to the formation of research groups having a critical mass of faculty. These groups include:

Human-Computer Interaction

The department has created an outstanding faculty in human-computer interaction. A successful "research infrastructure" (RI) award from NSF in the mid-1990s allowed the construction of specialized laboratories for HCI research. The department's commitment to this endeavor was reflected in faculty hiring so that he HCI group now consists of eight core faculty and twelve other affiliated faculty, research scientists, emeritus faculty, or research faculty. Laboratory facilities for conducting HCI research are contained in the Center for Human-Computer Interaction located in Torgersen Hall and two shared laboratories located in McBryde Hall. The HCI group has found good synergy in the "gigapixel display" project that has received initial funding from NSF. The HCI group is also the point of contact between the department and the arts and humanities. The department is collaborating on a "cyberarts" program in conjunction with departments in the College of Architecture and the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.

Computational Biology & Bioinformatics

The effort to build a faculty group in bioinformatics began in 1999. The department was motivated by the desire to create a critical-mass of faculty in this important emerging research area, to diversify its research portfolio through the addition of access to NIH funding, and to become a leading force in the deep and continuing interaction between computer science and the life sciences during the proclaimed "Century of Biology." The department's bioinformatics initiative was launched through a joint proposal by the department and the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) to the state's Commonwealth Technology Research Fund. This proposal positioned the department to hire five faculty in bioinformatics. The bioinformatics group has now grown to include 12 core faculty (including four VBI faculty with joint appointments in Computer Science), as well as seven affiliated faculty.

High-End Computing

The department is rapidly building a strong and cohesive presence in high-end computing. The department has long had individuals with research expertise in mathematical software and high performance computing. Computer Science brought to campus the first "supercomputers" in academic departments, including both the first shared-memory and the first distributed memory parallel computers on campus. More recently, the department created a 400-processor cluster computer which is available for use by researchers throughout the university. The department also has a several hundred processor complex for experimental research in the Laboratory for Computation, Information, and Distributed Processing. A member of the Computer Science faculty led the effort to build System X, a 10+ teraflop, 2200-processor cluster which made its debut in Fall 2003 as the third most powerful supercomputer in the world. Computer Science faculty lead the Center for High-End Computing Systems (CHECS) and several research labs, including the Laboratory for Advanced Scientific Computing and Applications (LASCA), the Scalable Performance Laboratory (SCAPE), the Parallel Emerging Architectures Research Lab (PEARL), the Systems, Networking & Renaissance Grokking (SyNeRGy ) Lab and the Distributed Systems & Storage Laboratory (DSSL ). The computer science faculty group in High-End Computing currently contains 13 core members and seven additional affiliated faculty.

Software Engineering

The department is also working to create a coherent focus among its faculty in software engineering. The six core faculty in this area led a multidisciplinary effort involving departments in the College of Engineering and the College of Business to define an M.S. degree in software engineering and are working to identify future initiatives.
