Physiological Indicators of Emotion for Artistic Applications

Advances in the development of low-cost ambulatory sensing systems that have previously been of the exclusive use of medical institutions and laboratories have helped to expand the frontiers of artwork, allowing new possibilities for interacting with performers and audiences. This talk will focus on the use of Physiological Indicators of Emotion (PIE) measured in ecological environments, as a means for creating and understanding artwork. A description of the work done by Javier and colleagues in researching the physiological responses of audiences and performers to music will be presented, as well as different art projects that have used these findings to develop novel and innovative ways of creating interactive art pieces.
Javier Jaimovich is a researcher and sound artist based in Santiago, Chile. Javier holds a B.A. in Music Technology from Universidad de Chile, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sonic Arts from the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queen’s University Belfast, UK. His research interests encompass the development of Digital Musical Instruments (DMI), Music and Emotion, BioMusic and BioSignals, Interactive Sound Art and Interactive Systems. Additionally, Javier enjoys creating interactive sound art installations and playing music. Javier has worked as a lecturer both in Chile and the UK, and as an assistant researcher for the EU FET Project Social Interaction and Entrainment using Music Performance (SIEMPRE). Currently, Javier is an Assistant Professor at the Music and Sonology Department in Universidad de Chile, where he teaches modules for the Music Technology and Composition degrees.
