Softlab's emphasis is on the design of software systems that provide high-level abstractions to their users, in support of problem solving, knowledge discovery, or, information finding. Our work is highly interdisciplinary, both in the domains outside computer science that we support and in the areas within computer science that we integrate. Past research results from our group include the data mining paradigms of "redescriptions" and "storytelling" for biological knowledge discovery, the out-of-turn interaction interface for flexible interaction with websites, and problem solving environments in diverse domains such as watershed assessment, wireless communications system design, microarray experiment management, and biochemical network modeling. Ongoing projects include computational modeling of RNA interference, data mining for neuro-informatics, and the "adaptive code kitchen", a framework that seeks to provide a runtime composition environment for native object codes.
