CS is Exemplary Department!

The Department of Computer Science was one of five departments to received the university's Exemplary Department Award at a ceremony on December 2, 2008. This award is given annual to those departments demonstrating outstanding accomplishments in the award's theme for that year. This year the award was given on the basis of collaboration with other units in the university to achieve novel advances in research and/or curriculum development. The department's nomination for the award, prepared by Dr. Osman Balci of the department's Honorifics Committee, included over 25 supporting letters from departments in eight different colleges and two institutes. In accepting the award, Dr. Dennis Kafura noted that collaboration was central to the department's mission as stated in the first sentence of the department's strategic plan: "The Department of Computer Science is committed to becoming internationally recognized for research at the intersections of knowledge domains within computer science and between computer science and other disciplines, especially where such research can empower the human potential in service to science and society."
