Gabriel Martinez, a first-semester CS junior, was recognized at Supercomputing 2008, the major international conference devoted to high-end computing systems and applications. In addition to the recognition, Gabriel received a $500 monetary award.

The title of Gabriel's award winning poster was titled "Characterizing and Optimizing Virtualization Overhead for Portable High-Performance Networking." This work was done in conjunction with his faculty advisor, Dr. Wu Feng.

Gabriel's travel to the conference was supported by the SC08 Broader Engagement Program, a new outreach initiative to students from  underrepresented groups in computer science.  This program makes mentoring available and supports face-to-face and digital opportunities to connect students with potential employers (for internships and/or long term employment).
