Fall 2008 CSRC Career Reception

Publish Date: 09/26/2008

The week of September 14th was a busy week for Computer Science majors thinking about future career opportunities. Starting with the CSRC picnic on Sunday, September 14, CS majors had several opportunities to meet with CSRC company representatives. On Monday, September 15, the Computer Science Resources Consortium fall luncheon was held at the Inn at Virginia Tech, followed by the CS Career Reception later that evening in the Bowman Room of the Jamerson Athletic Center.  The four newest members of the CSRC were introduced: Booz Allen Hamilton, DCS Corporation, Modea, and Hughes Network Systems.

The members of the Computer Science Resources Consortium,  the department’s industrial affiliates group, were on campus to learn more about the department and to recruit students as full-time employees, interns, and cooperative education students. CSRC companies provide support to the Department of Computer Science and student groups.

These events also provided an opportunity for students and company representatives to meet our new department head, Dr. Barbara Ryder.

Attending the luncheon were CS undergraduate scholarship winners, representatives from five CS student organizations and CS faculty.  Twenty-eight undergraduates were recognized for receiving scholarships for 2008/9 academic year.  The majority of these funds were provided by the College of Engineering, with the Department of Computer Science and three CSRC members, CGI, Lockheed Martin, and SWIFT, also contributing to the total.

Twenty-one of the current twenty-three members of the CSRC participated in the Career Reception.  The Career Reception, held in the Bowman Room of the Jamerson Athletic Center, allowed CS undergrads and graduate students to discuss career opportunities and industry trends with CSRC representatives.

Also during the week of the 14th, the CSRC members had the opportunity to have dinner with CS faculty at the department's facility in the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center.  They also visited several classes and spoke with Computer Science and General Engineering majors to discuss CS as a major, the variety of opportunities in the field, and the abundance of jobs available to CS majors.
