On Friday, May 15, 2009, nine undergraduate Computer Science majors accepted an invitation to join the prestigious honor society Phi Beta Kappa.

Dr. John Paul C. Vergara, a 1997 Ph.D. alumnus of the Computer Science Department has recently been appointed Vice President for Administration and Planning at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2009, Jennifer Kammer was awarded the C. T. Tate Distinguished Senior Co-op Award by Career Services.

On Thursday, April 9, 2009, Upsilson Pi Epsilon (UPE) inducted one of its largest groups of initiates.  Twenty-one students were inducted for the 2008/9 academic year.

CS Alumnus, Russ Housley, was appointed chair of the Internet Engineering Steering Group within the Internet Engineering Task Force, a premier technical standards body for the Internet.

Naren Ramakrishnan, Professor and Associate Head in the Computer Science department at Virginia Tech, was invited to serve on the organizing committee for the 2009 US Frontiers of Engineering (US FOE) Symposium, which will be held at the National Academies' Beckman Center in Irvine, California, on September 10-12, 2009.

National Capital Region Computer Science doctoral students, Jing (David) Dai, Arnold Boedihardjo, and Feng Chen were awarded second prize in the Security Category for their poster entitled "HOMES: Highway Operation Monitoring and Evaluation System."

 Dr. Godmar Back, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, has earned an NSF CAREER award to  research advanced browser and server execution environments that address the needs of next-generation cloud applications.

Jeremy Barksdale, a Ph.D. student, has received a distinguished fellowship from the Southern Regional Education Board to pursue his doctoral work in human-computer interaction research.

Ali Butt and Wu Feng are recipients of IBM Faculty Awards for large-scale bioinformatics and computational biology (Feng) and  application-tailored distributed computing (Butt).

Stacy Branham, a CS graduate student, has been awarded a prestigious and highly competitive Clare Boothe Luce Fellowship to pursue her doctoral degree focused on research in  human-computer interaction.

Anil Vullikanti, joint with Computer Science and the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, has been awarded the prestigious NSF CAREER award for his work on the theoretical foundations of cognitive radio networks.

Both Slashdot and the Government Computer News cited a paper presented at Supercomputing'08 by Virginia Tech researchers. The two graduate student authors,  Tom Scogland and G. Narayanaswamy, worked with the faculty author, Wu Feng, to report their findings on performance of multi-core architectures. A ribbon-cutting ceremony dedicated the newly renovated space on the first floor of McBryde Hall that forms the CS Undergraduate Learning Center.

Gabriel Martinez, a first-semester CS junior, was co-winner of the ACM Best Undergraduate Student Poster award at Supercomputing 2008, the major international conference devoted to high-end computing systems and applications.

Two elementary school teams connected to the Department of Computer Science made a big splash at the regional FIRST LEGO League tournament held in Blacksburg on November 16. The teams are both from Harding Avenue Elementary, located near the Virginia Tech campus. A total of 30 teams competed at the tournament in two age groups, almost double the number from last year.
