The Department is proud to announce that it has been a very successful spring for several of our PhD students who received news of fellowship awards from the VT College of Engineering, National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense. The new NCWIT award of $15,000 will support a series of annual summer workshops offering networking and professional development opportunities to high school teachers aimed at recruiting a more diverse population of women and minority students into undergraduate CS studies.

T.M. Murali, associate professor of computer science, has been recognized by The Office of the Vice President for Research as this week's "Virginia Tech Scholar of the Week."

Professor of computer science, Roger Ehrich, has been conferred the "professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

On Monday, February 18, the Computer Science Resources Consortium spring luncheon was held in Owens Banquet Hall at Virginia Tech, followed by the CS Spring Career Fair later that evening, which was also held in Owens Banquet Hall.  At the luncheon, company representatives, faculty, and invited students heard presentations from undergraduate and graduate students working on a variety of research projects. 

Dr. Gregory D. Abowd of Georgia Tech will be speaking at the CS Distinguished Lecture Series.

Congratulations to Drs. Fox, Butt, and Tilevich who have recently been awarded research funding.

The Department would like to congratulate and acknowledge the recent research accomplishments of Jacqueline Addesa, Gabriel Martinez, and Yinlin Chen.

Dr. Cao is the Department's latest recipient of the National Science Foundation's Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) award for his proposal titled "Multiscale Stochastic Simulation for Complex Biochemical Systems with Visualization Tools."

The Department of Computer Science celebrated 2009 Fall Commencement for approximately twenty-three undergraduates and eighteen graduate students on Thursday, December 17, 2009.  December graduates, their friends and family, and CS faculty and staff attended the CS Commencement Reception.

On Monday, December 7, VT Career Services honored December 2009 graduates who participated in the Cooperative Education/Internship program.  Graduating CS majors honored at the reception in the Smith Career Services Building were Justin Bolling, Jared Chelko, and Ramesh Srigiriraju.

Margaret Ellis, a graduate of the CS Masters program, started the company DevelopEase that produces iPhone applications designed to assist students with special needs.

Two Ph.D. students, Meg Dickey-Kurdziolek and Shaimaa Lazem, have recieved the Association for Computing Machinery Council on Women in Computing (ACM-W) scholarships to attend the 2010 ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work.

The Department of Computer Science is celebrating National Computer Science Education Week, December 6-12.

Computer Science alumnus Brian Sutton was awarded the 14th Leslie Fox Prize in Numerical Analysis this summer.

Congratulations to CS Faculty members who have received new research funding in the month of October! CS faculty members received awards as principle investigators and as collaborative partners from the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease.

Ramakrishnan is one of 84 professionals worldwide to be recognized as a 2009 Distinguished Member by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

The IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Modelling, Analysis and Simulation of Computer and Telecommunications Systems (MASCOTS '09) was held this September in London, UK.

The week of September 14th was a busy week for Computer Science majors thinking about future career opportunities.  On Monday, September 14, the Computer Science Resources Consortium fall luncheon and Career Fair were held in Owens Banquet Hall.  The CSRC welcomed 10 new companies: Abraxas Corporation, Comcast, CSC, ExcelaCom, G3 Technologies, General Dynamics AIS, OPOWER (Positive Energy), Qualcomm, SAIC, and Sapient.

Thomas Scogland has been awarded a prestigious 3-year National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) fellowship.

Frances E. Allen, IBM Research Emerita, will be the first speaker in the Distinguished Lecture Series this Friday.
