While celebrating the Department's 40th Anniversary at a reception on November 13th, the department took a moment to recogize the recipients of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. The awards served as recognition of the significant impact these individuals have had on the CS@VT community.

Computer Science Department faculty members ,Doug Bowman and Wu Feng, are among 47 ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) members honored for computing innovations this year.

On Monday, September 13, the Computer Science Resources Consortium fall luncheon and Career Fair were held in Owens Banquet Hall.   The CSRC events were part of a very good week for Computer Science majors thinking about future career opportunities.

Computer Science ranked 5th in a recent survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal of schools whose bachelor degree graduates were the best-trained and educated, and best able to succeed once hired.

Dr. Butt, an attendee at last year's event, served as an organizer for this year's symposium.

Congratulations to CS Department Head, Dr. Barbara Ryder, who was recently elected to a two-year term as Vice President of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

With the latest release of The Green500 List, accelerator-based supercomputers now occupy the top eight slots of the Green500, where the ‘fuel efficiency’ (or energy efficiency) of supercomputers is defined as ‘millions of floating-point operations per second’ (MFLOPS) divided by ‘watts’ (W) or MFLOPS/W.

On Saturday, May 15, the Virginia Tech College of Engineering conferred degrees on the class of 2010, including approximately 75 Computer Science undergraduate majors.  Graduate degrees were conferred at the Graduate Commencement on Friday, May 14.  Prior to the College of Engineering ceremony, Computer Science graduates, their guests and families, enjoyed a reception in the Torgersen Museum.  Several students were recognized for outstanding achievements and contributions, including Jeffrey Brabant, John Edstrom and Russell Wolf for undergraduate academic achievement, John Ed more

On Friday, May 14, Virginia Tech's Mu Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa initiated its Spring 2010 initiates in a ceremony in McBryde 100.  According to their official web site, PBK was founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776 and is the nation's oldest and most widely known academic honor society.  Among the Spring 2010 initiates were two Computer Science majors, Eric Johnson and Gabriel Martinez Arroyo.

Virignia Tech's College of Engineering held its thirteenth annual engineering faculty reception, honoring two dozen of its faculty for various awards in teaching, reasearch, service, and outreach.

The Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) has announced that there are now over one million readily available electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) online worldwide.

The Spring Research Symposium 2010 took place on April 28th with 18 students presenting 13 different projects. Almost 100 people attended the event, including students, faculty, administrators, and industry representatives.

For the second year in a row, a Computer Science student has won the C.T. Tate Distinguished Co-Op Award.  Computer Science senior Aaron Lindsay received the award after co-oping with IBM.

Mary Miller, of Blacksburg, Va., who earned her master's degree in computer science from Virginia Tech in 1985, is a 2010 inductee into Virginia Tech's College of Engineering Academy of Engineering Excellence, joining an elite group of 97 individuals out of more than 55,000 living engineering alumni.

On Thursday, April 15, 2010, Upsilson Pi Epsilon (UPE) held its 54th induction ceremony.   UPE inducted twenty new members to their VT chapter during the 2009/2010 academic year.

The new NCWIT award of $15,000 will support a series of annual summer workshops offering networking and professional development opportunities to high school teachers aimed at recruiting a more diverse population of women and minority students into undergraduate CS studies.

T.M. Murali, associate professor of computer science, has been recognized by The Office of the Vice President for Research as this week's "Virginia Tech Scholar of the Week."

Professor of computer science, Roger Ehrich, has been conferred the "professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
