The latest Green500 List ranking the most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world was released this month. 

The Discovery Analytics Center brings together faculty from across many disciplines to solve knowledge discovery problems.

CS PhD graduate Christopher Andrews and current CS PhD students M. Shahriar Hossain and Samah Gad, and their advisors Dr. Naren Ramakrishnan and Dr. Chris North, won the IEEE Symposium on Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) Mini Challenge Award.

Hari won this award at the premier conference in object-oriented (OO)  programming languages & systems.  This award is named for IBM-er John Vlissides, a co-author of the famous Patterns book for "best practices" OO programming.

On Friday, October 14, 2011, seven Virginia Tech student members of the Association for Women in Computing (AWC) drove to the Tennessee Celebration of Women in Computing, a regional conference located in Pikeville, Tennessee.

A group of Computer Science graduate students recently won the award for the best student poster at the 2011 Human Systems Integration Symposium, held Oct. 25-27 in Vienna, Virginia, and sponsored by the American Society of Naval Engineers.

Dr. Kirk Cameron, associate professor, is featured in Bloomberg Businessweek.

Congratulations to CS faculty who have recently been awarded research funding from Agilent Laboratories, the Army Corps of Engineers - Engineering Research and Development Center, Department of Homeland Security, FAA - NIA, and the NSF.

As a founding member of the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Pacesetters program, Virginia Tech’s Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering is striving to increase the number of women in its curriculum.  “Our enrollment of women in our graduate program is actually higher than the national average, but we are still working on our percentage of female undergraduates,” said Barbara Ryder, professor of computer science and the department head.

The proposal title was "BusTracker.EDU: Integrating Transportation Concepts into CS Curricula."

"Madhav Marathe, Ph.D., deputy director of VBI’s  Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory (NDSSL) and professor of computer science at Virginia Tech, has been named the first George A. Michael Distinguished Scholar by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)."

"The Associated Collegiate Press has named the Collegiate Times and two of its staffers as finalists for three of its top honors."

"The authors of the article are: T. M. Murali, a computer scientist, and Brett Tyler of the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, both located at Virginia Tech, and Michael G. Katze, a microbiologist and associate director of the Washington National Primate Research Center at the University of Washington."

On Monday, September 12, the Computer Science Resources Consortium had its fall luncheon and Career Fair.   This fall's career fair was the largest since the dot.com boom, with 64 companies attending.

"CUDA is short for Compute Unified Device Architecture, a parallel computing architecture developed by NVIDIA in 2007. This year, a total of 31 institutions were named as CUDA Research Centers, all dedicated to further advancing the growth of parallel computing across the globe, according to NVIDIA."

Dr. R. Benjamin Knapp will be joining the university on October 1, as the founding director of the Institute for Creativity, Arts and Technology.

Congratulations to CS faculty who have recently been awarded research funding from Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), the EPA, NSF, and Skype. 

For a third year, the CS Department hosted a summer workshop for high school teachers.
