TM Murali, PhD students Ahsanur Rahman (first author) and Chris Poirel, and group member David Badger won the Best Paper Award at the ACM Conference on Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and Biomedicine 2012.

Zalia Shams, a PhD candidate in computer science, won second place in the graduate division of the poster competition at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing for her work entitled "Evaluating Students' Assignments by Running Their Test Cases Against Each Others' Code."

Wu Feng and co-PIs Srinivas Aluru (Iowa State) and Kunie Olukutun (Stanford) were awarded an NSF-NIH Big Data grant entitled "Genomes Galore: Core Techniques, Libraries, and Domain-Specific Languages for High-Throughput DNA Sequencing."

Dr. Wu Feng, PI, Dr. Adrian Sandu, co-PI, and co-PIs at Virginia Tech Eric de Sturler (Math), Chris Roy (AOE), Danesh Tafti (ME) and co-PIs at NC State Jack Edwards (ME), Hong Luo (ME), and Frank Mueller (CS) were awarded funding from the AFSOR Basic Research Initiative program.

Dr. Deborah Tatar, along with colleagues in the Undergraduate Research Institute, Communication, Human Development, and Psychology, were awarded a $365,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for this REU.

On Monday, September 17, the Computer Science Resources Consortium had its fall luncheon and Career Fair. This fall's career fair, held in Cassell Coliseum, was the largest since the dot.com boom, with 78 companies attending.

Recent graduate, Dr. Hussein Ahmed, won the Devcup Silver prize at the Evernote Devcup 2012.

Danfeng Yao, assistant professor of computer science, PhD students Xiaokui Shu and Hussain Almohri, and undergraduate Laurel Schaefer gave lectures to middle school students attending the 2012 Imagination Summer Camp.

Congratulations to CS Faculty who were awarded research funding in the summer of 2012 from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Dr. Eli Tilevich, associate professor of computer science, recently received an award from the Microsoft Research Software Engineering Innovation Foundation (SEIF) for his work on mobile device applications. 

B. Aditya Prakash will also be joining our faculty in January 2013 as an assistant professor.

Sanmay earned his PhD degree in Computer Science at MIT in 2006, having graduated from Harvard in 2001. He was a postdoc in the Dept of Computer Science and Engineering at UCSD during 2006-2007.

Dr. Pardha Pyla, a 2007 graduate of the PhD program was part of the Grand Prize winning team at the User Experience Awards.

Congratulations to CS Faculty who were awarded research funding in the spring and early summer from ACM SIGSCE/SEC, Burroughs Wellcome, Compugreen, the NSF, and the Virginia Tech Provost. 

Dr. Steve Edwards, associate professor of computer science, was recently appointed as the W.S. "Pete" White Chair for Innovation in Engineering Education.

Dr. Scott McCrickard, associate professor of computer science, was recently awarded an NCWIT REU Faculty Recognition Award.

Dr. Hussein Ahmed, a 2010 graduate of the computer science PhD program, recently won his second Hackathon.  In addition to winning the April Hokie Health Code-a-Thon, he won the Lujure hack-a-thon held on May 11th and 12th. 

Two pairs of computer science students took first and second place in the Innovative Defense Technologies' (IDT) Collegiate Programming Contest.

Working as a team on a project for their senior capstone course, four computer science undergraduate students were among the winners at the inaugural Charles W. Steger Design Competition.

On Saturday, May 12, the Virginia Tech College of Engineering conferred degrees on the class of 2012, including approximately 90 Computer Science undergraduate students.  Graduate degrees were conferred at the Graduate Commencement on Friday, May 11.

On Thursday, May 10, Virginia Tech's Mu Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa held its Spring 2012 initation ceremony in McBryde 100.

University and industry scientists are determining how to forecast significant societal events, ranging from violent protests to nationwide credit-rate crashes, by analyzing the billions of pieces of information in the ocean of public communications, such as tweets, web queries, oil prices, and daily stock market activity.

Drs. Doug Bowman, Danfeng Yao, and TM Murali, each received a Dean's Award at the annual College of Engineering faculty reception.

Dr. Wu Feng, associate professor of computer science, Heshan Lin, research scientist, and Mark Gardner of information technology authored “MOON: MapReduce on Opportunistic Environments,” which was named one of the top 20 papers in the 20 year history of the ACM International Symposium on High-Performance Parallel and Distributed Computing.
