The Association for Women in Computing is happy to announce that five of its members are the proud recipients of the annual CAMEO Scholarship.

Researchers at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) and the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech have provided the first global analysis of human proteins interacting with viral proteins and proteins in other pathogens.

Adrian Sandu, associate professor at the CS department at Virginia Tech in collaboration with  I.M. Navon of Florida University, have received funding of $350,000 from NSF for research entitled "Solution of Inverse Problems with Adaptive Models."

Matthew Curtis-Maury, a Computer Science graduate student advised by Dr. Dimitrios Nikolopoulos, gave an invited seminar in the Computer Systems Lab (CSL) seminar series at Cornell University on November 20.

Dr. Manuel A. Perez-Quinones will participate as a panelist in the NSF-funded Academic Workshops for Underrepresented Faculty and Senior Graduate Students, scheduled for 11/30/07 – 12/2/07 in College Station, Texas, home of Texas A&M.
 

Virginia Tech had a strong presence at SC/07, the International Conference for High-Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis, held November 10-16 in Reno, NV.

Barbara G. Ryder, professor of computer science at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, will become the computer science department head at Virginia Tech, starting in fall 2008.

Kirk Cameron, associate professor of Computer Science at Virginia Tech, was one of the eighty-two of the nation’s brightest young engineers invited to participate in the National Academy of Engineering’s (NAE) 2008 U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium.

On Wednesday, March 26,the Virginia Tech softball team defeated the U.S. National Softball Team, 1-0, in an exhibition game at Hall of Fame Stadium. Our department is proud to have Morgan Harris, CS student and one of last semester’s Scholars of the Future, in the softball team. “It was unbelievable winning against the players you grow up watching on TV but thankfully they still let us all get their autographs after the game,” Harris said.
