|ACM Programming Team advances to ICPC World Finals - 06 December 2013|
On Nov 2, the ACM Programming Team participated in the 2013 Regional Qualifier for the ACM Intercollegiate Programming Competition (ICPC) along with 192 teams from universities and colleges across the Midatlantic region. Virginia Tech's top team placed 2nd. On December 6, 2013, they were selected for a wildcard slot to participate in the 38th ICPC World Finals to be held in Ekaterinburg, Russia in June 2014.more

On November 19, 2013, students in the sophomore seminar class presented "cool topics" to CS student ambassadors, advisors, faculty, and each other. As part of the sophomore seminar, students are assigned to a group which will decide on a "cool topic" to present towards the later part of the semester.more

On Monday, September 16, the Computer Science Resources Consortium had its fall luncheon and Career Fair. This fall's career fair, held in the Commonwealth Ballroom of the Squires Student Center, was the largest since the dot.com boom, with 84 companies attending.more

|VTURCS Undergraduate Research and Capstone Symposium - 30 April 2013|
On Thursday, April 25, the Computer Science Department held its 11th VTURCS Spring Symposium. Virginia Tech Undergraduate Research in Computer Science (VTURCS) encourages Computer Science undergraduate students to become involved in research. This year's symposium featured 26 projects, including nine capstone projects from the CS 4284 Systems and Networking Capstone course.

The Virginia/Washington, D.C., affiliate of the National Center for Women in IT held its second annual Award for Aspirations in Computing ceremony March 23 at the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington, Va., honoring a high school teacher and 14 high school students for their efforts to, respectively, teach and learn computer science.
|Rising Junior Elena Nadolinski wins Microsoft Scholarship - 02 April 2013|
Rising Junior Elena Nadolinski is the winner of a 2013-2014 Microsoft Scholarship. Recipients are chosen based on their academic record and a desire to make contributions to the software industry. After attending the NCWIT Summit in Tucson, Arizona, Nadolinski will travel to her internship at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft is a member of the CSRC.
