Associate professor Denis Gracanin is a summer scholar-in-residence studying "Neuroeconomics of Social Decision Making in Autism Spectrum Disorders."

Co-directors of the Complex Networks and Security Research Lab, Drs. Wenjing Lou, associate professor of computer science, and Tom Hou, professor of electrical and computer engineering, along with Hui Li (Xidian University, China) and CS graduate students Wenjai Sun, Bing Wang, Ning Cao, and Ming Li received a best paper award for "Privacy-Preserving Multi-keyword Text Search in the Cloud Supporting Similarity-based Ranking" at ASIACCS.

Students from CS 1124 Media Computation and CS 4644 Creative Computing Studio students presented their work at the ICAT Day held on May 6, 2013. 

Associate professor of computer science Ali Butt was awarded funding from Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL) for his proposal entitled "A Staged Data Delivery Tool for HPC."  Butt is the sole PI on this award. 

PhD student Austin Cory Bart placed 2nd in the graduate Student Research Competition at SIGCSE 2013.  Cory's work was entitled "Wacky Writing: Enhancing the XO Laptop Platform to Motivate Creative Writing by Children."  Bart's advisors on this project are Lori Pollock at the University of Delaware and Eli Telivich (VT). 

Professor Osman Balci (director of the Mobile Software Engineering Lab), CS graduate student Kyle Schutt, and Carl Harris (alumnus and chief technology architect for Communication Network Services) worked with the Office of Emergency Management and the Virginia Tech Police Department to create VTGemini, an emergency preparedness iOS app.

On Friday, April 26, a Spring Awards Banquet was held to recognize faculty, staff, and student achievements from the 2012/2013 academic year.

On Thusday, April 25, the Computer Science Department held its 11th VTURCS Spring Symposium. Virginia Tech Undergraduate Research in Computer Science (VTURCS) encourages Computer Science undergraduate students to become involved in research. This year's symposium featured 26 projects, including nine capstone projects from the CS 4284 Systems and Networking Capstone course.

Associate professor of computer science Wu Feng and PhD student Balaji Subramaniam won a best paper award at the ACM/SPEC/ICPE conference (Association of Computing Machinery/Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation/International Conference on Performance Engineering).

Second year computer science student Huanqing Liu was selected to present his research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research and at the ACC's Meeting of the Minds.

PhD student Bireswar Laha, advised by Doug Bowman, has received an IBM Fellowship Award.

Dr. Danfeng Yao received a three year grant from the Office of Naval Research for her project titled "Real-Time Anomaly Detection and Quantitative Assurance For Securing Systems."

Alexey Onufriev's paper, "Automating pK prediction and the preparation of biomolecular structures for atomistic molecular modeling and simulations," was selected as a featured article in Nucleic Acids Research.

Congratulations to CS Faculty who were awarded research funding in the winter of 2012/2013 from the Air Force, the Army, DARPA, L-3 Stratus, ONR, NSF and The SI.

Madhav Marathe was accepted for participation at the second offering of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Leadership in Science Policy Institute (LiSPI) in Washington, DC.

Naren Ramakrishnan's research featured in the cover story on data analytics in the ASEE December issue of Prism.

Aditya Prakash, assistant professor of computer science, and his co-authors won the Best Paper Award at the 21st ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management.

Chun-Yi Su, a PhD candidate in computer science, has been selected for the Lawrence Scholar Program at Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL).

In late 2012, Madhav Marathe, deputy director of the Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory and professor of computer science at Virginia Tech, of Blacksburg, Va., was named an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow.

Dr. Danfeng (Daphne) Yao, assistant professor of computer science and her collaborators at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Michigan State University won the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Network Protocols (ICNP) 2012, held in Austin, Texas earlier in November.

Congratulations to CS Faculty who were awarded research funding in the early part of the fall 2012 semester from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the US Department of the Army.

TM Murali, PhD students Ahsanur Rahman (first author) and Chris Poirel, and group member David Badger won the Best Paper Award at the ACM Conference on Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and Biomedicine 2012.

Zalia Shams, a PhD candidate in computer science, won second place in the graduate division of the poster competition at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing for her work entitled "Evaluating Students' Assignments by Running Their Test Cases Against Each Others' Code."

Wu Feng and co-PIs Srinivas Aluru (Iowa State) and Kunie Olukutun (Stanford) were awarded an NSF-NIH Big Data grant entitled "Genomes Galore: Core Techniques, Libraries, and Domain-Specific Languages for High-Throughput DNA Sequencing."

Dr. Wu Feng, PI, Dr. Adrian Sandu, co-PI, and co-PIs at Virginia Tech Eric de Sturler (Math), Chris Roy (AOE), Danesh Tafti (ME) and co-PIs at NC State Jack Edwards (ME), Hong Luo (ME), and Frank Mueller (CS) were awarded funding from the AFSOR Basic Research Initiative program.
