Gabriel Martinez, a first-semester CS junior, was co-winner of the ACM Best Undergraduate Student Poster award at Supercomputing 2008, the major international conference devoted to high-end computing systems and applications.

VTCS news imageElementary Students Score Big in LEGO League - 19 November 2008

Two elementary school teams connected to the Department of Computer Science made a big splash at the regional FIRST LEGO League tournament held in Blacksburg on November 16. The teams are both from Harding Avenue Elementary, located near the Virginia Tech campus. A total of 30 teams competed at the tournament in two age groups, almost double the number from last year.

Estelle Kim, a CS major, has been awarded a Vanguard Women in Information Technology Scholarship Award for 2008 -- one of nine merit-based awards by Vanguard to female students entering their senior year of college and pursuing studies in computer science, computer engineering, web design, or related information technology disciplines.

Steve Harrison who, with a group of faculty and students at Virginia Tech known collectively as the Digital Arts Research Collective, has created 'Revo-overR', an original piece of multimedia art for the opening of Roanoke’s Taubman Museum of Art. This 3 year collaboration involved students and faculty from the departments of computer science, music, and theatre arts.

VTCS news imageFeng and Huang Win IP Competition - 13 November 2008

Wu Feng and his Ph.D. student Song Huang are the co-inventors of the EcoDaemon "green computing" system that received the top prize in an Intellectual Property to Market competition. EnergyWare is finalizing a license agreement with Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties  Inc. for the EcoDaemon technology.

Dr. Naren Ramakrishnan's research was featured by the National Science Foundation on its Discovery section that highlights signficant work funded by the Foundation. The feature on Naren's work to locate biological "switches" in cells  also includes a video interview.
