 On Saturday, May 10, 2008, the Department of Computer Science celebrated
Spring 2008 commencement at a reception honoring undergraduates,
graduates, friends and families, and faculty. Approximately 65 students
completed a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, and 37 graduate
degrees were awarded. Special guests at the reception included Mrs. Anne
Gorsline, wife of the first department head Dr. George Gorsline, and her daughter, Suzanne Gorsline-Hogan. The department also
recognized several undergraduates and graduate students for achievements
in scholarship and research. |

Barbara G. Ryder, professor of computer science at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, will become the computer science department head at Virginia Tech, starting in fall 2008. She is the first woman to serve as a department head in the history of the nationally ranked College of Engineering. 
Kirk Cameron, associate professor of Computer Science at Virginia Tech, was one of the eighty-two of the nation’s brightest young engineers invited to participate in the National Academy of Engineering’s (NAE) 2008 U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. The symposium will be hosted by Sandia National Laboratories at the 
Emil Constantinescu, Ph.D in Computer Science advised by Dr. Adrian Sandu at Virginia Tech, has recently earned this year’s Wilkinson fellowship at Argonne National Lab.
Matthew Curtis-Maury, a Computer Science graduate student advised by Dr. Dimitrios Nikolopoulos, has been awarded the "Outstanding Graduate Student Award -- Doctoral" by the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. This award recognizes significant research contribution through published research papers, presentations, and most importantly scholarly impact of the doctoral work. Curtis-Maury has received this award, which was presented on Saturday May 10th at the departmental commencement reception, for his dissertation entitled "Improving the Efficiency of Parallel Applications on Multithreaded and Multicore Systems."
