Students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa

 Four Computer Science majors were recently inducted into the Virginia Tech Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society.  Phi Beta Kappa was founded at The College of William and Mary in 1776, and recognizes undergraduate excellence in liberal arts and sciences.  Seniors inducted into Phi Beta Kappa are in the top 10% of their graduating class and have earned an overall GPA of at least 3.8.

VTURCS Spring Research Symposium
The VTURCS Spring Research Symposium will be on April 24th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. This year it will take place in Torgersen 1100 (the Torgersen museum)--food will be available for all in attendance! All students are invited to attend to support your classmates, find out   about undergraduate research in the CS Department, and assist in the selection of the "People's Choice" awards. NDSSL Project Presented on Capitol Hill
The Comprehensive National Incident Management System being developed by the Network Dynamics and Simulation Science Laboratory (NDSSL) for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency was presented at a technology forum in March 2008, held by the Senate Armed Services Committee.  Professor Chris Barrett, NDSSL Director, is the lead on this project which applies high-performance computing-based decision and policy informatics to simulate and study pandemics and other catastrophic events, natural or man-made.

Feng Serves as Program Vice-Chair for ICPP 2008
Active ImageWu Feng, Associate Professor, has been appointed Program Vice-Chair for the 37th International Conference on Parallel Processing, in the OS and Resource Management technical track. ICPP is the oldest academic conference in the field of parallel processing and remains a premier venue for researchers in academia, government, and industry to present the latest research findings in any area of parallel or distributed computing. This year the conference will be held in Portland, OR between September 8 and September 12, 2008.

 
VT softball team victory
Active ImageOn Wednesday, March 26, the Virginia Tech softball team defeated the U.S. National Softball Team, 1-0, in an exhibition game at Hall of Fame Stadium. Our department is proud to have Morgan Harris, CS student and one of last semester’s Scholars of the Future, in the softball team. “It was unbelievable winning against the players you grow up watching on TV but thankfully they still let us all get their autographs after the game,” Harris said.

Ganesh Narayanaswamy receives Outstanding Graduate Student Award
Active ImageOn Thursday, March 27, CS graduate student Ganesh Narayanaswamy received the College of Engineering’s Outstanding M.S. Student Award. It is indeed a great honor to have received this award and I feel really elated.  It is a huge encouragement for any graduate student and I hope to continue upholding the department's good name in the future.  I would like to thank my advisor Dr. Wu-chun Feng for nominating me and for his continued support, advice and belief in me.  Thanks also to all my friends, colleagues and family members for their constant inspiration, which has made this award possible,” Narayanaswamy said.
