The Department of Computer Science is home to one of the largest groups of undergraduate majors in the university as well as to graduate students in Blacksburg and at the Northern Virginia Center. Students receive outstanding instruction from dedicated teachers, and undergraduate and graduate students alike join faculty members to perform research in a variety of state-of-the-art facilities, including a state-of-the-art technology building. The B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs provide in-depth exposure to the core body of knowledge in the computing discipline, preparing graduates for careers or further study.
In July 2003, the department joined the College of Engineering after
more than 30 years in the College of Arts and Sciences. The
department's focus on the fundamental properties and processes
associated with software is complemented by the discipline-centered
application of software systems in other departments within the college. The
computer science major is software oriented, in contrast to the
hardware-oriented computer engineering major. Computer science majors
design and develop software, from the software systems that control the
functioning of the computer such as operating systems and compilers to
applications software for areas such as numerical analysis, graphics,
and data bases.
