To support its teaching and research activities, the department maintains a variety of computing facilities, including well over 200 networked workstations for student and faculty use. These include Intel-based machines running Windows and UNIX, and Apple systems. Graduate students are supported in their daily and coursework activities by several general-purpose computing labs, and accounts and storage space on the departmental Windows 200 network and two large-scale, multiprocessor UNIX servers.
Specially equipped research laboratories in the department and around
the Blacksburg campus support work across all areas of the discipline.
These facilities include a usability engineering laboratory designed
for meta-evaluation; head-mounted virtual reality displays; the VT-CAVE
(a 3-D audio/visual environment driven by an eight-processor SGI Power
Onyx); and connectivity through Virginia Tech's advanced networking
infrastructure and Internet2 access. Department faculty play a lead
role in the university's terascale computing facility (a world-class
supercomputer consisting of 1,100 dual 2.0 GHz Apple G5s). A second
large (400 processor) cluster is located in the department's Laboratory
for Advanced Scientific Computing and Applications.
For current faculty, staff, and students, more information on computing
resources is available in the intranet section of the web site
(restricted to cs.vt.edu domain), including information on whom to
contact for help.
