Department Vision

Vision of the FutureThe Department of Computer Science is committed to becoming internationally recognized for research at the intersections of knowledge domains within computer science and between computer science and other disciplines, especially where such research can empower the human potential in service to science and society. We will reinforce, extend, and diversify our strengths in interdisciplinary innovation and collaboration while striving to become recognized for addressing critical, scientifically important problems.

We are committed to creating a graduate research environment and culture that fosters excellence and diversity, and inspires a generation of computer scientists externally visible to the college, university, and international computing communities. Our doctoral students will be competitive for faculty appointments at peer or better departments or equivalent industry positions. We will achieve and sustain a level of Ph.D. production competitive with peer departments and meeting college benchmarks.

We are committed, through continuing curriculum improvements and a new undergraduate learning center, to an undergraduate program pursued by a vibrant, diverse community of engaged and active learners. Our graduates will be well prepared for graduate school and the diverse workplaces of the global economy.

We are committed to developing a cadre of leading faculty through improved mentoring to guide faculty development, through securing chairs and named professorships to acknowledge faculty achievement, and through nomination of faculty for awards.

We are committed to fulfilling the education and research outreach missions to Northern Virginia by establishing a reputation competitive with those of other departments in the region, by collaborating with local industry, and by engaging in community outreach.

We approach these goals with a critical mass of faculty in several vital domains, a young and dynamic faculty, a culture of collaboration and interdisciplinary research, a steeply rising trajectory of competitive research funding, a graduate program that has reached the upper echelons of Ph.D. production, a well-regarded accredited undergraduate program, and a sound financial basis in a highly ranked college.

We are committed to achieving these goals knowing that some of them, indeed some of the most important ones, will only be achieved by determined, long-term effort by our faculty and students.
