The Computer Science Career Night

On Monday, February 16, the Computer Science Resources Consortium spring luncheon was held at The Inn at Virginia Tech, followed by CS Career Night later that evening in the Bowman Room of the Jamerson Athletic Center.  At the luncheon, company representatives, faculty, and invited students heard from undergraduate and graduate students working on a variety of research projects.  A variety of topics were described; topics are listed below with the student pictures.   In addition, two student scholarship recipients were recognized.  The CS Department appreciates the generosity of CGI and Vanguard, who made these scholarships possible.

Later in the day, students attended CS Career Night in the Bowman Room.  The CS Career Night event, in its eighteenth year, gave CS majors an opportunity to visit  with our industrial affiliates to discuss internship, co-operative education, and full-time positions.  Twenty one companies were represented at this year’s Career Night event, including the CSRC’s two newest members, Duke Energy and Fidelity.

The Computer Science Career Reception

The 12th Annual Computer Science Career Reception was held Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, for all CS undergraduate and graduate students. The event gave students preparing to enter the work force an opportunity to meet representatives from CSRC member companies and to discuss career goals and opportunities.

While on campus for this event, representatives from the CSRC member companies participated in panel discussions in a junior/senior level professionalism class and the Hypatia/Galileo freshmen seminar classes. Students asked a variety of questions from these experts in the “real world.” The representatives reported good news for the CS job market, with most saying that their companies will be greatly increasing the number of new hires.

CSRC members also had the opportunity to attend a luncheon where the invited guests included CS faculty, undergraduate scholarship winners, and CS student group leaders.;
